The Real Fix for Low Libido

Let’s get one thing straight: women have the right to toe-curling, rock-your-world orgasms — at every age.

If you’re in your 40s or 50s and your libido has gone missing, you’re not broken. You’re hormonal. Menopause (and perimenopause before it) changes everything — physically, emotionally, and sexually. But with the right knowledge and treatment, you can absolutely get your groove back.

The Truth About Menopause and Libido

When estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone start to drop, your brain, skin, and sex drive feel it. Add in rising cortisol (your stress hormone) and suddenly the spark that used to come naturally takes more effort.

Many women notice low libido years before they hit full menopause. If you’re in your 40s and wondering why you’d rather fold laundry than have sex, your hormones are giving you clues — not judgment.

What’s Draining Your Desire

If sex feels like a chore, here are some of the usual suspects:

  • Vaginal dryness or atrophy – Low estrogen makes tissues thinner, less elastic, and more prone to tearing or burning during sex.

  • Night sweats and fatigue – You can’t feel sexy if you’re exhausted and drenched.

  • Mood swings or anxiety – When your neurotransmitters are off balance, your libido follows.

  • Weight gain or body changes – Confidence takes a hit when your clothes feel different.

  • High cortisol – Chronic stress hijacks testosterone, crushing desire.

  • Thyroid imbalance – Low thyroid function slows metabolism and contributes to fatigue, brain fog, and low libido.

These aren’t excuses — they’re biology. The key is to treat the cause, not accept the decline.

Step One: Get Professional Help (From Someone Who Actually Knows Menopause)

Here’s the hard truth: menopause medicine is barely covered in most medical training, even in OB/GYN residencies. If your provider dismisses your symptoms or tells you that symptoms are normal as you age, find one who listens.

A qualified menopause specialist will review your hormone levels, perform a pelvic and vaginal exam, and create a plan to address your symptoms — from dryness to low libido to orgasmic changes.

Step Two: Explore Your Treatment Options

1. Lubricants and Moisturizers

Start simple. High-quality silicone-based lubricants provide longer-lasting comfort than water-based ones. Avoid petroleum products — they trap bacteria and damage condoms.  My favorite is Uberlube, a silky-smooth, pure silicone lubricant used during sex.

Vaginal moisturizers can help with daily dryness, but they only offer short-term relief. To truly fix the issue, you’ll likely need estrogen or regenerative therapy.

2. Pelvic Floor Strengthening (Emsella)

A strong pelvic floor means better bladder control and better orgasms. The Emsella chair delivers the equivalent of 11,000 Kegels in 30 minutes — no sweat, no effort, just results.

Since most of the pleasurable contractions we feel during orgasm come from the pelvic floor muscles, a stronger floor means an easier, better orgasm.

3. Vaginal Estrogen Therapy

When sex still hurts despite lube, it’s time to rebuild the tissue itself. Localized estrogen (in creams, tablets, or rings) restores thickness, elasticity, and moisture to the vaginal walls. Moist and plump and pain-free is the goal — and it’s achievable.

4. Testosterone Therapy

This is my favorite hormone to replace — because when women get their testosterone back, everything changes. While testosterone is critical for a healthy libido, it also boosts energy, muscle tone, metabolism, and focus.

While the FDA hasn’t approved testosterone for women (yet), countless studies show it’s both effective and safe when dosed correctly. It is prescribed off-label by a knowledgeable provider.

5. The “Little Pink Pill” (Flibanserin)

For some premenopausal or early menopausal women with low desire, Addyi (flibanserin) can help increase sexual interest. It’s not Viagra — it works on the brain’s desire pathways, not blood flow.

6. PRP Injections

If you’re saying, “My orgasms are just… fine,” this one’s for you. PRP (platelet-rich plasma) uses your body’s own growth factors to regenerate nerves, increase sensitivity, and improve blood flow. Injected into key areas of the vagina and clitoris, it can lead to stronger, more reliable orgasms and less pain during sex.

Step Three: Redefine “Normal”

It’s time to stop pretending low libido is something women just have to accept. You don’t hear men being told to “tough it out” when their performance declines — and neither should you.

Your sexual function is a vital sign of health, not a luxury. When your hormones, tissue health, and pelvic floor are balanced, desire returns — naturally.
