The scale measures how much you weigh. It doesn't tell you what your body is made of or where you're storing fat. During perimenopause and menopause, those changes can happen long before the number on the scale starts creeping upward.
The answer usually isn't that you're suddenly eating more. It's that your body composition is changing.

One of the biggest misconceptions about aging is that metabolism simply slows down.
In reality, one of the biggest reasons metabolism changes is because we lose muscle.
Beginning in our 30s, adults gradually lose muscle mass, and that process accelerates during perimenopause and menopause.
Muscle isn't just something that helps you look toned. It's one of the most important organs of longevity, because it is metabolically active tissue. It burns calories even when you're resting and serves as one of the body's largest storage sites for glucose after a meal.

When muscle declines:

In reality, estrogen influences nearly every major metabolic system in the body.
Healthy estrogen levels help maintain muscle mass, improve insulin sensitivity, reduce inflammation, and influence where your body stores fat.
During perimenopause, estrogen doesn't simply decline. It often fluctuates dramatically from month to month before eventually reaching consistently lower levels after menopause.
Those fluctuations are one reason you may notice your waistline changing years before you stop having periods.
As estrogen becomes less predictable, your body gradually shifts from storing fat primarily around the hips and thighs to storing more fat around your abdomen.
Much of this abdominal fat is visceral fat, the fat that surrounds your internal organs.
Unlike the fat you can pinch under your skin, visceral fat surrounds your internal organs and is metabolically active. The scale only tells you one thing: your total body weight.
It can't tell you whether you've gained muscle, lost body fat, or reduced the dangerous visceral fat surrounding your internal organs. It doesn't distinguish between fat, muscle, bone, or water.
