The Skinny on Weight Loss Options

As we learn more about obesity, we've come to understand it as a chronic, relapsing medical condition, much like diabetes or other long-term illnesses. For many, losing weight is not just about willpower; it’s about understanding the underlying biological and environmental factors that play a significant role. With 41.9% of Americans now classified as obese, weight loss is a priority for countless individuals seeking to improve their health and quality of life.
Here’s a comprehensive look at weight loss options available today—from lifestyle changes and supplements to medical treatments.

Understanding Obesity and Its Impact on Health
Obesity is generally defined as excess body fat, though it’s often measured by BMI (Body Mass Index), calculated from one’s weight and height. While not the most precise measurement, elevated BMI is linked to a range of health risks, including heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, diabetes, and certain cancers. The rise in obesity over recent decades is linked to factors like sedentary lifestyles, high-calorie diets, larger portion sizes, and even increased stress levels.
When to Consider Weight Loss Treatments
For many, lifestyle changes alone—like diet and exercise—are effective first steps in weight loss. However, when BMI is over 30 or over 27 with related health conditions (like diabetes or hypertension), considering medical interventions, such as weight-loss medications, can be beneficial. Even modest weight loss can boost self-image and mental outlook, so finding the right approach that aligns with your goals is essential.
Over-the-Counter Weight Loss Options
Plenity and Cellpress:Plenity and Cellpress work as natural fillers, helping control portion size by expanding in the stomach when taken with water before meals. They absorb water, giving a feeling of fullness, which can support reduced calorie intake. However, as with any fiber-based product, side effects may include bloating and gas.
Calcium Pyruvate:Calcium Pyruvate aids in fat burning by converting food to energy. Found naturally in foods like apples, cheese, and red wine, this supplement works best in conjunction with other weight-loss methods and should not replace a daily calcium supplement.
Orlistat (Alli):Orlistat works by blocking the absorption of dietary fats, helping to reduce calorie intake. However, side effects can include loose or oily stools as unabsorbed fats pass through the body. Orlistat is FDA-approved and can be helpful as a part of a balanced diet and exercise routine.
Prescription Weight Loss Medications
Semaglutide (Ozempic/Wegovy): Semaglutide mimics GLP-1, a hormone that influences appetite and fullness. Initially designed for diabetes, it is now widely used for weight loss as it slows gastric emptying, promotes fullness, and curbs hunger. Common side effects can include nausea and stomach pain, but it has also shown protective effects for the heart and brain.
Tirzepatide (Mounjaro): Tirzepatide, a new option approved for both diabetes and weight loss, mimics two hormones (GLP-1 and GIP), and may offer greater weight-loss potential than Semaglutide, averaging around 20% body weight loss. It has also shown benefits in bone formation and has fewer side effects for some people. Tirzepatide and Semaglutide are both administered as weekly injections.
Contrave: Contrave combines bupropion (an antidepressant) and naltrexone (an opioid blocker) to reduce hunger and curb cravings by altering brain chemistry. This medication is particularly useful for those who struggle with food cravings and compulsive eating. Side effects can include dry mouth, insomnia, and nausea, and this may also be a good option for those who smoke or suffer from mild depression.
Qsymia: Qsymia combines phentermine and topiramate, a migraine medication, to suppress appetite and reduce food cravings. It’s often used for those needing significant weight loss and works by controlling both hunger and cravings. Qsymia can alter the taste of certain foods, which some find beneficial, while others may find it off-putting.
Phentermine Alone: Phentermine, the most affordable of these prescription options, is a stimulant that suppresses appetite. Although effective, it can increase heart rate, cause jitteriness, and may disrupt sleep, so it’s typically recommended only for those without heart conditions or anxiety. For best results, it’s taken early in the day to avoid insomnia, and is sometimes tapered off to prevent an energy “crash.”

The Role of Bariatric Surgery
For those with a BMI over 40, or over 35 with related health issues, bariatric surgery may be an effective option. This is typically considered for those who need to lose a significant amount of weight for health reasons. However, bariatric surgery requires serious consideration, preparation, and follow-up. Counseling with a nutritionist or dietitian is essential to ensure patients understand the necessary lifestyle changes and nutrient needs post-surgery.
While effective, bariatric surgery is not a “cure” for obesity, and patients should view it as one component in a lifelong journey of health management.
The Importance of Holistic Weight Management
While many options exist for weight loss, each person’s journey is unique. Many factors affect weight, including genetics, lifestyle, and mental health. Choosing a weight-loss plan that suits your goals, lifestyle, and health status can help you build a sustainable approach for long-term success. Additionally, working with healthcare professionals can provide insights and support to navigate your journey effectively.
With so many tools available—from lifestyle changes and supplements to medications and surgery—achieving a healthy weight is more accessible than ever. Weight loss is not one-size-fits-all, and finding the right combination of approaches is key to lasting success. Whether you’re motivated by a personal goal, a health concern, or simply a desire for change, having a plan that fits your life is essential to unlocking your path to better health and wellness.
