Core Strength Is More Than Abs: What Most People Are Missing

This Is Not Just About Your Abs


When most people think about core strength, they think about a six-pack of abs.

But your core is not just one muscle group. It is a system that includes your abdominals, back muscles, diaphragm, and pelvic floor. Think of it like a tall rectangular muscular box in the center of your torso. These muscles are meant to work together to support your spine, stabilize your body, and allow you to move efficiently.


When that system is working well, movement feels easy and controlled. When it is not, things start to feel off in ways that are often subtle at first.

What You May Be Noticing

You may not describe this as a core problem, but you may notice:

  • Your balance is not what it used to be

  • Your posture has changed

  • Your back feels tighter or more fatigued

  • Certain movements feel less stable

  • You feel less strong despite working out


These changes are often related to how well your core is functioning as a system, not just how strong your abs are.


The Missing Piece Is Often the Pelvic Floor

One of the most overlooked parts of the core is the pelvic floor. The pelvic floor sits at the base of the core and plays a key role in stability. It supports the bladder and pelvic organs, helps control urinary function, and works with the rest of the core to stabilize the spine during movement.


When the pelvic floor is not functioning well, the entire system becomes less efficient. You may compensate with other muscles, which can lead to tension, fatigue, or a feeling that your body is not as coordinated or supported as it used to be.


In many cases, symptoms like urgency, frequency, or even low back discomfort are tied back to this part of the system.


Why Traditional Core Work Is Not Always Enough

A lot of core training focuses on visible muscles, mainly the abdominals. Exercises like planks and crunches may strengthen parts of the core, but they do not always address how the entire system is functioning together. In particular they often miss the pelvic floor.  The pelvic floor system of muscles is a tricky one to strengthen.


Several studies of elite female athletes have tested them trying all manner of exercises, like Pilates, yoga, and weightlifting. None of these activities seemed to thicken or hypertrophy the muscles in the pelvic floor. Instead, we need to put direct energy to the pelvic floor in order to see a meaningful change.


How We Approach Core Strength Differently

When we evaluate core strength, we look at the full system. For the pelvic floor, this often requires more than just trying to engage the muscle on your own. Many people either cannot generate a strong enough contraction or are not activating the muscle effectively.
